Kailei Pew is a genius!
Last December she announced on her blog that she would be hosting a brand new Kids’ Choice KidLit Writing Contest. What a great idea to have KID judges!
The rules were pretty simple: Write a 200-word or less story for PB (approximately ages 3-8), MG (approximately ages 8-12), or YA readers (approximately ages 13-18).

Grumble
Fox’s ears perked up.
“Do you hear that?” he asked Deer.
Grumble
Deer listened. “I do.”
GRUMBLE, rumble
“I hear it too,” said Rabbit hopping over.
GRUMBLE, rumble, roar!
“Hide!” yelled Fox.
GRUMBLE, RUMBLE, roar!
“It’s getting louder” whispered Rabbit.
“What is it?” asked Deer.
“I think it’s the abominable snowman!” squeaked Rabbit.
“No, he lives high in the mountains,” said Fox.
GRUMBLE, RUMBLE, ROAR!
“It’s just trucks on the highway,” said Deer nervously.
“But we don’t live near a highway!” said Fox, listening again. “Shhh.”
“I know what it is…a fire-breathing dragon, coming…to EAT ALL OF US!”
“Run!”
Deer, Rabbit and Fox stumbled over each other in a panic, crashing into a tangled heap.
GRUMBLE, RUMBLE, ROAR!
“I can’t watch!” Rabbit burrowed into Fox’s tail.
CRUNCH, CHOMP,
Nibble, gulp, chew
Sigh…BURP!
Fox’s ears perked up. “Do you hear that?”
They untangled themselves and peeked.
“Oh, Bear!” said Fox, “It’s just you, awake from your winter’s nap!”
Rabbit and Deer melted in relief. “Phew, it’s just Bear!”
“Of course it’s me, who did you think I was? A fire-breathing dragon?” Bear laughed.
“These blueberries sure hit the spot. My tummy’s been growling all morning.”
BURP!
